Talking to your health care provider

There are specific aspects health care providers need to know in order to provide you with the best treatment; this includes one’s sexual identity and gender orientation.

  • Gender identity – your confirmed gender and the gender you were assigned at birth
  • Sexual orientation – The confirmed gender of the person you are having sexual intercourse with and the sex they were assigned at birth.

This is an important step to ensure everyone receives appropriate care. Learn more about the importance of talking about these subjects with your provider with the Do Ask, Do Tell: Talking to your health care provider about being LGBTQ resource.

PrEP

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is a daily medication to reduce the risk of contacting HIV. PrEP is made to prevent someone without HIV from getting the virus through sex or injected drug use (if you are having sexual intercourse with someone who uses injected drug PrEP can reduce your chance of contracting HIV).

PrEP is highly effective. Studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken daily. Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by at least 74% when taken daily.

PrEP is covered by the Oregon Health Plan. If you need help signing up for the Oregon Health Plan or want to know if you qualify, our OHP assister TaNeshia can help. Visit our OHP page for more information.
